Stunning Cityscape photography in Budapest

I've been to Budapest a lot over the past 10 years. Often I didn't have a camera with me, or on one particular trip I had my camera but somehow had it set to ISO 4000 for the whole trip. Grainy images galore! Pretty sure that one wasn't my fault...

Since resurrecting my photography hobby a year ago and purchasing an Olympus OMD EM-10, I have been itching to 'retake' some of my photographs of Budapest. As I am currently living and working in Melbourne, Australia that made Budapest slightly more than a weekend 'city break' as it used to be.

Recently I was able to take a trip to Budapest and spend a couple of days exploring and photographing my favourite European city, this time with a camera up to the job. There are so many great places to visit in Budapest but here I want to share some of my favourite photography spots.

Beautiful Views of The City and Danube River from a Budapest Tram

You can take the number 2 tram as a 'cheap' way of seeing most of the major sights of Budapest. A single ticket will cost about 340 forints which is around $1.50 AUD - bargain. For me though, just north of the Erzsébet Híd (Elizabeth Bridge) is a great spot to stop and take a photograph. From here you can see Buda Castle (pictured), several famous Budapest bridges and of course get a shot of a passing tram.

If you walk across the Chain Bridge and turn right rather than lazily taking the Funicular railway, you'll have about 200 steps to climb before being rewarded with a stunning view of the city. In particular the Parliament building is fantastic from here at night or by day. I'll be covering each attraction in more detail soon as I could easily show 20 or more photographs of Parliament and still not do it justice...

Immerse Yourself In History at Heroes Square

The 1st time I visited Heroes Square, I really was wowed by the area. A friend took my wife and I on a bit of a guided tour. She told us a little history about each of the Heroes' statues you can see here. It doesn't help you photograph but I think Hungary's history is so interesting and well worth reading up on to understand a little about this monument. Getting here is easy, just walk down Andrassy street and after taking in Heroes' Square I recommend a walk in the park nearby - Varosliget.

As I mentioned, each attraction could and should have it's own post with associated photography. The above are just some of MY favourites, I have of course left out Buda Castle, Fishermans Bastion, Gellert and Szecheny Baths and St Stephens Basilica plus many more.
